It’s tempting to think that when it comes to buying tablecloths, the only thing that matters is the size of the tables you need to cover. While it’s absolutely true that you can blindly purchase linens without any sort of knowledge regarding table linens, knowing just a few things about textiles will help you better understand your own needs as a consumer when buying a tablecloth–or, more likely, enough tablecloths for an entire party.
A tablecloth is a cloth used to cover a table. Some are mainly ornamental coverings, which may also help protect the table from scratches and stains. Other tablecloths are designed to be spread on a dining table before laying out tableware and food. Some cloths are designed as part of an overall table setting, with coordinating napkins, placemats, or other decorative pieces. Special kinds of tablecloth include runners which overhang the table at two ends only and table protectors to provide a padded layer under a normal cloth.
The size of the table linen should be chosen while keeping the occasion in mind. For formal occasions, it should hang down 10 inches to 12 inches around the table. If you want to add extra elegance, then you can create a drop of 15 to 30 inches. The key to creating a dramatic look is to choose a longer drop.
If you think that you can't do much with a tablecloth, think again. Getting creative with your tablecloth placement and usage can have a dramatic visual effect on any dinner, event or banquet. Tablecloths, when used cleverly, make just as big a statement as flowers, centerpieces and the rest of your decor-you just have to be willing to arrange them in ways you haven't necessarily tried before. When you do that, your table settings will get as much acclaim as whatever you put on them.
